Established in 1997 by Yoko Ono Lennon, the John Lennon Songwriting Contest (JLSC) is an international platform that celebrates the creativity of songwriters worldwide. Open to both amateurs and professionals, the contest offers participants the chance to showcase their talents across 12 distinct categories: Rock, Pop, Hip-Hop, Country, Jazz, R&B, Children's, Folk, World, Latin, Electronic, and Gospel/Inspirational.

Each year, the JLSC recognizes 72 Finalists and 24 Grand Prize Winners. These Grand Prize Winners then compete for the prestigious Lennon Awards, with one exceptional song earning the title of "Song of the Year" and a $20,000 prize. Notably, the contest emphasizes the quality of songwriting over production, judging entries based on originality, melody, composition, and lyrics when applicable.

The contest boasts a distinguished panel of judges, including renowned artists such as George Clinton, Prince Royce, Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and members of 311. Their expertise ensures that each submission is evaluated with the utmost respect for the craft of songwriting.

Beyond the competition, proceeds from the JLSC support the non-profit John Lennon Educational Tour Bus. This mobile recording studio is dedicated to providing young people with opportunities to create original music and digital media, fostering the next generation of artists.

As we reflect on John Lennon's enduring influence, the JLSC stands as a testament to his legacy, inspiring songwriters to imagine and create without boundaries.
